A34. “An employee should not publicize a company’s ethical violations if doing so could harm the company.”
No matter which domain it is in, the final target of a certain company is to pursue the maximum profit. Compared to this pivotal objective, everything else is supplementary and subordinate. It is likely the case that sometimes the company may violate the ethics in order to achieve the maximum profit goal. At this point of time, the employees can really be confronted to a dilemma: to publicize or not to publicize. The author asserts that the employee should not publicize the violation if such activity may harm the company. To the contrary, others may hold the opposite idea. I think to simply claim should or should not is very imprudent. In my view, however, each of these alternatives is viable in certain circumstances and the practical criterion to make the decision is the correlated law rather than ethical standards.
To begin with, ethics is not clear and definite to serve as a criterion. Different people hold different values due to their respective background, thus have different ethical standards. Some one may judge it to be violation of the ethics while others may not, concerning one activity of the company. In fact, any company is considered to have committed pollution more or less thereby violate the ethics as to those most moral people. Should all employees of all companies to publicize this so-called violation of the ethics? The answer is apparently no.
Compared to its counterpart, law is much more feasible to function as a criterion. First, the procedures of the legislation determine that the law represents the majority’s ethical standards and can be well accepted by the public. Moreover, any legal provision is concrete and clarified which will bring no controversy. To publicize the violation of the law instead of the violation of the ethics is obviously a better and more practical choice for the employees of a company.
Admittedly, there is a lag between the legislation and some serious violations of ethics. However, after considering the pros and cons, it is still reasonable to use the law as a criterion. A solution can be to make the legislators work more efficiently.
In conclusion, whether the employees should publicize the violation of ethics of their company depends on whether the company violates the correlated law at the same time. Due to the above-mentioned reasons, the employees should let the public know the violation of ethics when the company disobeys the law at the same time, or vice versa.
