It does depend on your pre-MBA background. If you have a good quantitative background, such as a degree in mathematics or economics, and you want to apply to programs in business management, such as accounting, then a MBA is good choice. It will familiarize you with the basic business knowledge needed to understand business research and come up with your own research ideas. It's hard for a student with no accounting background to come up with innovative research ideas, right? Plus, some lower-ranked schools prefer candidates with MBA degrees because it enables students to assume teaching positions right after they enter the program. However, if you already earn a degree in business management and you lack formal quantititative training, the marginal effect of an MBA degree is relatively low. MBA courses are comparatively soft and less rigorous. You need to strengthen your profile by taking more quantitative courses. A master in economics, mathematics, and statistics might fit you better.
