1）where
   C项 where紧跟earth，语义上理解为，navigators 在地球上收集信息，这是不对的；这里的语义是navigator飞出地球之外采集关于地球大小和地球表面状况的信息；

2）关于gather的你说的表目的，我觉得并不绝对；
   因为这里说的是已经发生的事情，根据后面astronomers have made new observations……可以判断出这一点；
   gathering information 我认为是发生在过去的，伴随sailed around the earth的动作；
   从语义对称的角度来说，后半句没有表目的，前半句在此也不需要表示目的。

综上，vote for D

谢谢啊。。只有你理我~~~~~但是，我的疑问是以下两点
一、其实你会发现GMAT题有好多，是已经发生的事情，但是是表达以前那个动作的目的，同样用to do 表示目标。
二、至于你的第一点，1、是我已经看过好多的解释了，我觉得理由不足 2、这个是航海家，怎么飞出地球啊。。。？ 3、这个解释已经被有一个叫黄卓明的专家反驳掉了，where是没有错误的。

C选项，看到Similar to 开头的句子，一定错，无论后面说什么，立马排除。Where 的用法不是很正确，因为where通常只一个很特定的地点，例如图书馆，咖啡厅，城市等。至于地球吗，这个范围略大，所以where不合适。

至于gathering 和 to gather 。我个人偏向后者。记住，GMAT选最优项，但不代表是最完美的。相对其他错误，D的错误可忽略，或者不是考点。该题考点，平行对比，以及Similar to 的用法，足以得出答案。

1，where这一点我翻成飞出是不对，但还是觉得这点有点问题，因为并不是强调在哪儿采集的；gather应该是在sail out中一起完成的动作。其实语法很难讲说哪个老师讲的绝对对，对where这个点，我还是持保留态度的；

2，关于to do表目的，我也做到过一些题目明明是表目的，但却是不选to do表达选项，因为该选项有其他明显错误的。

最后，好的选项是比出来的，这话真的挺像废话的，但做了很多题，总结了很多之后真的发现没有放之四海而皆准的 general rule.

还有那个考G满分网，今天碰到一题答案都错了，可能还是要结合多个资料来看吧～
