112 Some people think that children should begin their formal education at a very early age and should spend most of their time on school studies. Others believe that young children should spend most of their time playing. Compare these two views. Which view do you agree with? Why?

Most parents in Asia believe that children should begin their formal education at a very early age and spend most of their time on school studies. This widely accepted attitude also affected their governments’ education policies. For instance, in Singapore, although the age for children to enter primary school is six to seven, children in kindergarten have already attended programs similar to those in schools. On the other hand, parents in western countries insist that young children should spend most of their time playing. In my opinion, I fully agree with the statement that, for a young child, nothing is more important than play.

One reason is that play is one of the instincts of animals. Study on animal behavior discovered that young animals born with the instinct that lead them to play to explore and learn about the environment. Play helps animals to gain all kinds of skills that they need to survive. As human beings are higher animals, children should not be robbed of the right to follow their natural instincts to discover the world.

A further reason is that play is very important to children’s development. Games, together with toys, TV programs and playgrounds make a man’s childhood colorful. Considering the fact that play helps children to experiment different roles and learn to adapt to the rules of social groups, teaches children to deal with problems, enables children to interact with others, and provides children with chances to feel and express emotions, we cannot overlook the role of play in our growing progress. As babies have to learn to crawl before they learn to walk, play is an important step that cannot be skipped.

Admittedly, when children are old enough, it is necessary for them to study through ways other than play. With books and teachers as good resources of knowledge, formal study is essential to them. But it is a myth that young children should invest all of their time in school studies. For young children, they should have enough time to play.

Depending on different backgrounds and different traditional cultures, different people have their respective views about the beginning of formal education. An attitude accepted widely by some people in eastern countries is that children should start their studying earlier, but parents who live in western counties still insist that young children should spend more time on playing. As far as I am concerned, I totally agree with the statement that playing is more important.

  First of all, considering some games as the key factors of development of children's bodies, parents should provide more chances for chirldren to play. In other words, playing game is a very important process that can help children build their health bodies. For example, to join all kinds of sports, such as skiing in winter and swimming in summer, will imporve the children's health and strong their bodies. Moreover, the children can study very efficient when they gorw up to the age of school.

Secondly, it is obvious that many children can increase their experiences from the playing. Young people learn many games from their parents and communicate with their partners that deliver the ideas from one to one. For instance, many children play the computer game, watch TV and paly the football that introduce a lot of knowledge to children. They can learn how to control the computer better, learn how to cook from TV and get the spirit of teamwork from the football team. As a result, parents will be very happy when they find that their children know many things very well.

Admittedly, formal education can provide more knowledge from the teachers and books, however, the books can not provide the strong bodies and life experiences. Furthermore, to study too early may leads to many inverse affections such as

bad bodies and no idea about the basic knowledge of daily life.

In conclusion of discussion above, I personally insist that playing is very important before the age of presenting the formal education because children can get more profits from the playing. Even though there are many people assert that children should accept earlier formal education, we can not overlook the opposite affection.
