182. Many people have a close relationship with their pets. These people treat their birds, cats, or other animals as members of their family. In your opinion, are such relationships good? Why or why not? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Nowadays, many people have a close relationship with their pets. Some of them even treat their animals as members of their family. It seems to be a good phenomenon at first sight, however, a rational analysis of all facts would undoubtedly lead to the conclusion that such relationships are not good.

Firstly, animals, which are quite different from people, may feel uneasy when they are treated as mankind. Each kind of animals has their own habits, but they must obey the habits of the hosts when they have become so-called family members. Furthermore, because they are animals in itself, they cannot really express their feelings to people. For example, my aunt even teaches her dog to use the toilet, shake hands with guests, etc., but in the dog's eye, things may be not so nice as my aunt thinks and it has no choice but follow the instructions to get enough food. In a recent research, it is stated that many animals living in people's families have caught some serious mental disease.

The second reason that confirms my viewpoint is that people may be more lonely with their pets. In the modern society, the relationship between people has become so complex that many people distrust others in their daily lives. It is the very reason that now more people adopt pets in their families than ever before, they feel that only animals will keep loyal to them. They speak to animals, have dinner with animals, even sleep with animals, it is only animal that can make them feel warm. But in the long run, keeping doing so will do harm to those people as they will be too distracted from the real society. And it is not strange that a man has committed suicide just because his cat had died.

Admittedly, to some extent, animals can awake people of their natural love towards the world, but when all factors are taken into consideration the disadvantages of treating animals as family members far overweigh the advantages. On one hand, animals will be unhappy; on the other hand, people will be farther from the normal society and living style.

So, from all the reasons I have analyzed above, we can safely draw the conclusion that such relationships between people and animals are not good. There is no denying that we should love animals, however, undoubtedly not in this way.
