问一个有关主语比较和状语比较区分的问题

想问下大家这两句的区别在哪，为什么前者是主语比较，后者是状语比较，怎么区分？谢谢！ Demographers would have to know a great deal more than they do now about the social and economic determinants of fertility. Rice has protein of higher quality than ever before.

这是曼哈顿上Ron的解释
我觉得主要问题是"than now"会造成歧义吧，曼哈顿SC上不是说comparison中省略的前提是不造成不必要的ambiguity嘛~
