People who develope many different skills are more successful than people who focus on one skill only.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nowadays, more and more young parents in China tend to let their children learn many kinds of lessons to have a good command of many different skills. This trend seems to tell people that the more skills you own, the more success you'll get. But is this a wise choice, as far as I am concerned, I don't think so and I believe people who focus on only one skill have more chance to become successful.
First and foremost, the time and enegy people can exploit is limited. It's just hard for people to try to develope many different skills at the same time. If they do so, undoubtedly, they will have an average command of each skill, which can not lead them to find a good job or to be the top in one field, in another word, they can not be successful in this way. Take myself as an example. As a software engineer to-be, there're many different techniques in this field. These techniques are all brilliant and appealling and I chose to learn every aspect of these at first. After a period of time of studying, when I tried to find a internship job, it turned out that I could not even get one internship offer because I didn't have one sharp skill these companis required. So, through this instance, we can clearly see that developing many different skills is somehow not a wise selection.
Moreover, skills you command should be originated from your interest, which will lead you to put all your energy and focus your whole attention to this specific skill. This is the best situation on your way to develope a skill. It is crystal clear that most celebrities around the world all grab their prosperity in this mode. Take two giants in IT industry as an example, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs both chose to drop out their college at the junior year after finding their own inner voice and figuring out that they didn't want to learn the other skills they are not interested in. Gates then was concentrated on developing an operating system and finally Windows came up, which resulted in the starting up of the most successful software company, Microsoft. About Jobs, he put all his energy in user friendliness research and finally founded Apple, which brought some extremly novel and lovable products like iphone, ipad and so forth. Therefore, in a word, interest makes you focus on one skill, which brings you to the right trajectory of success.
As mentioned above, we see the merits brought by focusing on one skill. But we can not neglect some good parts of developing many differet skills before people step into a mature age. When at a young age, people are not mature enough, both mentally and physically. At this time, different skills can not only help people accommodate the complicated society, but also will lead them to find what they really love. Steve Jobs once said in the commencement of Stanford, 2005, "The only way to de great work is to love what you do. If you don't find it yet, keep looking and don't settle." So, when you are developing different skills, this also means that you are on your way of looking for your true love, your deep heart motivation.
Conclusively speaking, if we have already found one skill we really love, then we should focus all our attention on developing this skill. On the contray, if we are still in the process of searching for this skill, why not try some different skills until finding that one.
