Claim: The best test of an argument is its ability toconvince someone with an opposing viewpoint.
Reason: Only by being forced to defend an idea against thedoubts and contrasting views of others does one really discover the value ofthat idea.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to whichyou agree or disagree with the claim and the reason on which that claim isbased.

正:辩论能够发现一个论点的价值,非常有效。
反:1、不一定总能使用这个方法,比如
  1)找不到了解这个事情的人
  2)找不到持反对意见的人
  3)辩论消耗太多的时间和精力,不可行
   2、不一定是最好的办法,辩论有认为感情因素影响,有其他替代的方法,如:保持沉默,让事实说话。
散:综合运用多种方法去检验一个论点。

Someone claims that the best test of an argument is itsability to convince someone with an opposing viewpoint. This assertion may betrue when there is limited methodology and scientific condition. But nowadays,when argument becoming more and more complex, qualifying and testing an argumentin this way is no longer the best choice.

First of all, defending an idea against the doubts andcontrasting views of others can obvious shows that potential value orshort-comings of a argument. During the debating process, everyone can illustratehis or her own opinions and challenge others with rational reasons or provedtruths. In order to make one's argument persuasive enough to be accepted byadversaries, the defenders has to try their best to evaluate their positioncarefully and thus rationality or defect of it can be revealed clearly. Thisactivity is especially useful when a complex plan is figuring out to solve aproblem. For example, most of the fortune Top 500 companies will hold aconference called "Brain Storm" to make a plan for next year.

However, defending against the doubts and contrasting viewsof others is not always available. Considering the CEO of some big companies,whose daily work is to guide the development of their companies, may haveinfinite power and not too many employees are brave enough to debate againstthem. So sometimes, the leader's judgments are agreed by the whole company andthen potential defeats in it are not detected. Meanwhile, defending againstother always consume leaders a large amount of time, which is very expensive andfinite to them. Since each person has its own education and culture backgroundand they may have distinctive minds to the same argument according to theirsocial and career experience. Duo to this reason, if a argument needs to beconvinced by all the people in a company, a defender has to prepare differentmaterial and choose various ways for each employees, which is neither practicalnor rational. So this method is not universal applicable.

Furthermore, defending against the doubts and contrastingviews of others is also not the best way in some condition. At most of thetime, people have partial attitude towards their own opinion, so they will try todefend this argument even though it is not valuable and practical. In thissituation, some other methods which are objective and persuasive than debating arerequired to testify a argument. Frequently, facing the dissatisfaction ofothers, eminent people get used to let fact speaks for itself. For example, theCEO of Apple Inc. never reply the complain made by his customers and he alwaystrust his own decision and strategy. As time goes by, hot selling of Apple'sproducts proves that all his perception are absolutely correct.

All in all, defending against the doubts and contrastingviews of others is a useful way to discover the value of that idea. But it isnot universal applicable. When we are carefully analysis the advantages anddisadvantages of a ideal, different methods should be adopted to get acomprehensive and reliable result.

这两个很近的理由。
