13) Universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position.
Due to the explosive development of science and technology, so much is new and complex in our modern society. When it comes to the variety of courses taken in universities, there are always a host of different opinions held by different individuals. Is it really essential and substantial for every student to take various courses outside his’ own fields required by universities? Admittedly, many people even specialists believe that taking different course during the period in university is bound to benefit students a lot. However, any school and student have the right to choose to give or take those courses or not, with their own educational purpose and learning aims, and as a matter of fact, in some field, in order to achieve a big process, it is better to learn deeply rather than widely.
To begin with, since various disciplines are interrelated, it is good to a student’s own major when learning different courses. Such as economics combines with mathematics, arts is along with physics, public management accompanies with psychology, management, politics. Even the one, who is as famous as Da Vinci, as a artist as well as a scientist, using anatomy in drawing pictures, making the person on the paper can not be even more vivid, and surely making himself one of the most great artist in the history along the world. What’s more, by learning complex kinds of knowledge, students can broaden their horizons, and may find new academic fields where their real interest and potential gift lie. However, even though a quantity of benefits comes, no one can claim that every one in every school should take a variety of courses; neither could one afford the decimal consequence if it is so. First of all, what kinds of courses would be provide, and who do the decision , and how many those courses from how many different fields they choose, can not be determined by only one person or one institution. Secondly, students have the rights to choose learn more or not. How can you imagine letting someone get an D in his own major and still be forced to learn many other fields’ courses? Learning over one’s own capability will do damage to him both physically and mentally. Surely, students ought to choose according to his own interests. Thirdly, not all universities have the power to build up those multi-disciplines programs, like colleges for professional training, which is not capable and even necessary to do so.
Besides, as a whole, a man’s time and energy is limited, so the more energy and time put in one field or one project ,the more possible one can make a great difference to contributes to human beings, otherwise, learning a lot but not good at one place, one may accomplish nothing at all. As in the society, we have different kinds of professor in different fields, such as physicist, artist, physiologist and so on. Poentgen worked tens of years in his own major then find X-ray; Edison tried hundreds of times to invent bulb, Qi Baishi, a famous Chinese painter, spends his whole life studying how to draw shrimp as lively as he can.
In sum, even through that worldwide globalization and diversification today requires us students to learn a lot of knowledge out of our own special field, leading us to be more suitable and applicable to the society. Yet, it doesn’t mean everyone should take different courses the more the better. Literally, students should choose courses to take as his own need, and more actually, the length and width of learning is complementary, which suggest that students need to explored the knowledge fields, with the premise that studying and researching deeply in his own major, to acquire the true education. |
