Issue 207 Rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. Without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are. Outline: Agree partly 1. r and c inspire people of their sense of belonging andhelps people realize who they are. 2. r and c ensure the existence and continuousness of theculture. E.g. the Easter bunny and color egg and the costume play inthe renaissance festival Disagree partly 1.sense of who they are can be found naturally by philosophical thinking 用时:1小时字数:650 When talkingabout whether the sense of whom we are would diminish if rituals and ceremoniesdisappear, the author holds that the rituals and ceremonies help define aculture and thus help us find whom we really are. To some extent, I agree withthe author’s general assertion only if people cannot develop the sense of whothey are from other places. However, theauthor unnecessarily extends this broad assertion to an irreversible extremewhile overlooks other factors that may affect this issue. On balance, my pointsof agreement and contention with author involve the fundamental and deepanalysis as discussed below. On onehand, I would like to admit that this statement has some merits and novelty indiscussing the role that rituals and ceremonies play. The first reason leads meto this conclusion is that rituals and ceremonies inspire people of their innersense of belonging and helps peoplerealize who they really are. Since the diversity of this world lies in the factthat every country has their unique culture, the rituals and ceremonies in eachcountry has their own attributes. Therefore, people in the country thatdemonstrate special ceremonies and own rituals will bestow a sense ofbelonging. It can be substantiated by the following example; the rituals ofexpressing love in Paris make the city the “Romantic City”, the allowance of Frenchkiss on the street makes the people there more romantic and find their sense ofwho they are. Hence, it is quite evident that the rituals and ceremonies in acity can help the people there find the sense who they are. Furthermore, rituals and ceremoniesensure the existence and continuousness of their culture and the long existculture give rise to the characteristics of people there. As an illustration, let us take a look at the case of Easter bunny and color egg, the conventionalcustoms of celebrating the Easter have last for many years, this helps theexistence and the continuousness of the Easter, and this ritual gives hope for Christianand give them faith in God. Besides, the rituals and ceremonies helps people findtheir characteristics such as never lie and help those who in need.Consequently, under this circumstance it clearly shows that if rituals andceremonies are no longer exits, people will have less confidence in finding thesense of who they really are. On the other hand, recognizing thatthere are other ways of finding the sense of who we are can undermine theassertion that without rituals and ceremonies people would have less sense ofwho they are. The assertion overestimates the importance of rituals andceremonies that plays on people physical level. As the information becomesincreasingly symmetrical, people will have access to any information they areinterested in. This provides the foundation of the assertion that culturalimpact on an individual will diminish as the information technology develops. For instance, people now have access to the different cultural on the internetand they may get absorbed by those cultures different that their own; besides, they now have increasingly access to the philosophical readings on the internetand discuss it as they want. Therefore, the rituals and ceremonies will haveless impact on people’s discovering the sense of who they are and the original assertioncannot be correct. In conclusion, issue of whetherrituals and ceremonies will help people realize who they are is a complex onewhich requires subjective judgment. Consequently, there are no easy or certainanswers. Even though the rituals and ceremonies exert great influence onpeoples’ discovering the sense of who they are, the impact of the it hasdiminishing as people are encountering increasingly abundant information today. Therefore, I hold the point that people will have less sense of who they arewithout rituals and ceremonies only if people cannot develop the senseof who they are from other places. |
