答案是D，是否因为原文说了Pepper is consequently in relatively short supply?但是这并不能推出Surplus stocks，因为文中没有提到surplus的意味。虽然从常理推断是这样的，但是从原文不是很有力地推出。
当然，我选了E，也不是理想的答案，因为存在了一个假设，就是种植者要赢利，也许是错在unprecedented。但是我觉得5个答案都不太好。
听大家意见。

The key sentence is not the one you pointed out. The passage says that the sales exceed production. If there is no stock, how can sales outpaced production? So D is the answer.

BTW, you are right that "unprecedented" is not suggested in the passage. There is simply no information for such an inference

Thanks Mindfree. Actually, I just felt there is no any implication in the article that the stock of pepper was surplus, but, indeed, "Pepper is consequently in relatively short supply" means there actually was , so the D is the best choice.

BTW, LOGO中的口水是看见MM时候发生的吗？
