Argument 64 题目:
Collectors prize the ancient life-size clay statues of human figures made on Kali Island but have long wondered how Kalinese artists were able to depict bodies with such realistic precision. Since archaeologists have recently discovered molds of human heads and hands on Kali, we can now conclude that the ancient Kalinese artists used molds of actual bodies, not sculpting tools and techniques, to create these statues. This discovery explains why Kalinese miniature statues were abstract and entirely different in style: molds could be used only for life-size sculptures. It also explains why few ancient Kalinese sculpting tools have been found. In light of this discovery, collectors predict that the life-size sculptures will decrease in value while the miniatures increase in value.

Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the prediction and the argument on which it is based are reasonable. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the prediction.

The predictions made in this essay imply that the life-size sculptures will decrease in value while the miniatures increase in value. To support his argument, the author provides evidence that some molds for life-size sculptures have recently discovered and few tools which are used to create miniatures, which sound good. However, some questions can be asked by the readers after reading the argument; and if those questions are not answered by the author, the argument seems questionable and tenuous.

In the first place, the author argues that some molds for life-size sculptures are found recently. Nevertheless, readers will ask that why the author can conclude that this molds are largely used for create life-size sculptures, and these tools are only used to create them. As we can imagine, it is entirely possible that those things discovered by archaeologists are not molds, although we regard them as molds now, and these things are just used to do other things. Granted that Kilinese artists used them to depict life-size sculptures, the author failed to convince us of the fact that those tools are not used for miniatures. To make the argument more persuasive and convincing, the author has to add some information inferring that those things exhumed were molds and were truly used for life-size sculptures only.

In addition, the author also asserts that abstract and entirely different miniatures also demonstrate that few tools for miniatures have been found. But why we can say that few tools have been found predicts that they cannot be found in the future? There is high probability that tools like molds for creating miniatures will be found in the recent future or can be detected by some updated equipment. Unless the author provides more evidence indicating that miniature statues were made by Kilinese artists totally by hands, we have reasons doubting the reasonability of the argument.

Finally, the author predicts that the life-size sculptures will decrease in value while the miniature statues increase in value. This prediction is definitely unreasonable. Questions like why life-size sculptures cannot be much more ancient than miniatures may weaken the author's argument. It is also likely that miniature statues are in much larger numbers than life-size ones do, which can lead to the much higher price than the miniatures as the old saying goes -- "It is precious that it is rare". Lack of information about the numbers of each sculpture and the approximate ages of them will make the argument less convincing.

To sum up, although the whole argument is seemingly good, there are many flaws existing in the passage and they will cause many questions asked by the readers. Only by providing more evidence answering the questions can the readers believe in the prediction made by the author.
