Government officials should rely on their own judgmentrather than unquestioningly carry out the will of the people they serve.
The statement comes from the perspective that government leaders should listen to theirown judgment regardless of what type of their political regime is and what era theybelong to. I would say it is true to some degree; however, I disagree to someextent.
Admittedly, since the very conception of government has been established, governmentofficials owns the power or rights to make decisions, whatever it is empoweredby the people or by themselves. There’s no denying the fact that governmentofficials do have some advantages relying their own judgment to make decisions.Being well trained and professional in dealing with some challenges, especiallyin emergent cases, such as the unexpected natural disaster, government officialsshould listen to themselves first and rely on their own judgment to makeeffective decisions. For example, when the severe earthquake hit Sichuanprovince, China in 2008, many people from all over the country were eager to goto Sichuan and volunteer for the damaged place. However, the governmentofficials said no to most of them, though they were out of good will. It is notthat the government officials didn’t allow them to offer their help, it’s justbecause the consequences of more people there was hard to bear since water andfood were in short supply.
However,in a more specific scrutinization, the statement is too arbitrary since we haveto take the different political regimes and different historical periods intoconsiderations. In a democratic country, the government is of the people, bythe people, and for the people. Thus, the will of the people should be thepriority for the government officials to consider when making importantdecisions. For example, there’s a heated topic in my hometown regarding whetherto set up a system that the teachers’ salaries are solely based on students’ academicperformances. Our local government makes such suggestions considering several benefits, but it gives the citizens’ rights to decide to whether to utilize this systemor not. In contrast, in the ancient China, no matter in which dynasty, the countrywas ruled by one single family and emperors didn’t necessarily listen to thewill of its people since in that immature historical period, the emperors feltit was justified to do whatever they want because they fight for it to get the country.
In addition, as far as I’m concerned, who is better or cleverer enough to make thedecision is not the most critical issue, whether it is the government officialsor the people, rather, the most significant issue is to set up a consummatepolitical system, which is truly suitable for one particular country. Since thedemocratic government has many forms, take the United States and China forexample, one is capitalism democratically country and one is socialism democraticallycountry, it is hard to decide which is better, but I do agree that the two ofthem choose their political system according to their own history and culturerespectively.
In sum, whetherthe government officials should rely on their own judgment or unquestionably carryout the will of its people depends on different situations and differentpolitical regime or historical periods. Besides, it’s no use arguing who isbetter to make the decisions, what is most curial is to set up a fully suitablepolitical regime which is deeply based on its own country’s characteristics. |
