My personal observation: most Americans seems to already weigh the US News ranking heavier.

If BW comes up with a ranking with too much surprise, it's going to hurt its reputation -- kindly of shooting its own feet.

Happen to find these two critics of BW ranking:

Read David Downes' article: Does BusinessWeek Ranking Matter?
Read Ivo Welch's article: The 2000 Business Week Rankings of Business Schools

They are a little old and perhaps biased, but still make interesting reading.

I don't agree with you. Business week itself is much influential than US News, in fact, how many people read US news?? Business week is the first magzine who started to rank the business school back to 1988. Before that, no body ever thought that Kellogg is a top school. Because of BW ranking, Kellogg's fame grows rapidly. I remember a couple of years ago, Wharton even held a school wide party to celebrate their top ranking in BW.  Athough more and more top magzines started to rank b'schools, because it is traditional tie with b's schools, iBW is still the most important ranking.

I don't deny the fact that BW ranking is influential.

But, US News is equally influential, if not more.  US News started its ranking of American colleges and universities in 1983, and started ranking America's Best Graduate Schools in 1994.  Its ranking is the oldest and more widely know by the general public.  Its ranking methodology and results tend to be more stable and closer to the general public's perception.

It's true that the BW ranking is slightly better known in the business community.  But since BW ranking methodologies and results have swayed significantly over the years, the BW ranking is perceived by many as less a reflection of the true public opinions.

Just ask yourself a hypothetical question: if you get offers from both HBS and another school ranked by BW as No. 1, which school would you choose to attend?

I guess:

1. Top seven re-shuffle; Wharton, Kellogg, Columbia are leaders

2. Up: UMich, Yale, Stern, Kenan-Klagler

3. Down: Fuqua, Tuck, USC, Indiana

Just for fun!

I am here to argue for which ranking could exert more impact, not which ranking is right. The fact is that each business school pays much attention to BW ranking, not US new ranking. Probably you still remember that two years ago, when ranking came out. Business school took put top four schools pictures in the its magzines. All four schools showed tremendous support for this magzine, Kellogg, chicago, Harvard, Standford. Deans from those four schools with hundreds of students got together only for BW to take pictures. Can you imgagin US news could have same glamours to make that even harvard and Standford would like to assembley students to take a pic for magzine's ranking??

Yes, I've read that 2002 BW issue.  But then was then, and now is now.  As you know, HBS and Wharton have pulled out of BW ranking, and it won't surprise me if other schools follow suite next year.  So, in my personal opinion, this whole ranking business is overrated.  As GMAC has announced that it is going to provide its own "audited" data about bschools as an alternative to the outside rankings, I could imagine that a couple years down the road, the importance of rankings will somewhat shrink.
