It is not surprising, as laziness is human nature. Professors who get tenure may quit working hard because of different reasons: 1. They are tired of research; 2. They are too busy with other responsibilities (fame effect) to afford the cost of research; 3, They are more ambitious in the impact, not loads of research, which reduces their productivity. None of the above three points suggests that professors are not fond of research at least for some period. Note that research is not like fun activities such as water slides; Instead, it is a torturing process that leads to a higher level of intellectual understanding. Mediocre researchers may not have justifiable motivations or cannot see the benefits and excitement when involving in the academia career. What is even worse is that those guys may not be easily identified by outsider sponsors due to the complexity of intellectual characteristics, but they can not hide their true identities from their peers. And what is the point of being a self-deceiving cheater who does not even believe in what he is doing? 南郭先生常有, 但吹竽的人并非都在充数. -- by 会员 benxu (2011/9/24 6:53:15)
Nice post Just add one more possiblilty: I do know several guys publish very few works after tenure. They publish less not because they are tired of research, in fact they thought they can really do some research that they think is important or fundamental but is not popular or not likely to be published. It is not difficult to see their passion in research even from a short discussion on some topics. |
