It is difficult even For most phds in top programs to have 1 single author JF or JFE when they go to the job market.

eople discount a lot when they see a coauthor paper on ur cv(I mean coauthor with faculty).

Trying to improve ur background, or getting some strong recommendation letter from good prof. are far more realistic strategies.

Yeap, you are right in the case of job market candidate

I have to say there's zero observation point as I can recall(that suggests how this issue is unrealistic in application) but I guess they still discount it a lot even coauthor with junior faculty if you are just a phd applicant.

In fact I do know one econ applicant with a senior coauthored JPE several years ago, but I heard(not sure though) she didn't get any top20 econ offer.
