Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? In 20 years from now on, students will not use printed books anymore.
There is indeed an obvious trend that e-book industry is developing greatly, many people has many e-books in their phones and computers. In the subways or buses, almost everyone, sitting or standing, looks down to their PSPs or phones, focusing on their e-books. Sometimes they are so addicted to them as to forget to get off. Notwithstanding, will the printed books be extinct, will the students never use paper books anymore? I hardly believe so. Here I would like to illustrate some reasons as following.
First and foremost, our eyes cannot get used to reading e-books on computer for a long time. We can skim some short novels or scan daily newspapers on the screen, but seldom are able to read the textbook with deep understanding more than 3 hours. Our eyes will blur and tears will come out unconsciously. For me, I cannot keep reading research reports in the computer, because not only my reading speed slows down, but also it takes me more time to understand the ideas. Research shows more people will choose to read paper books if the reading time exceed half an hour.
In addition, reading or writing on the screen for a long time will do harm to our health. I remember my professor who is very gentle and cares about the students insist unreasonably that we have to hand in paper reports or assignments wherever she is. Therefore, after finishing the our final reports, most classmates will send her their assignments through EMS or DHL, and get her revised papers by post. That’s because her neck is injured by the long-time reading and working in front of the computer, and now she can only check some emails through laptop in no more than 10 minutes.
Admittedly, e-books have countless advantages. Not to mention the friendly prices, we can take them everywhere only using a SD card, re-edit the books thousands of times, and share the notes with the same group by emails within 5 seconds. Certainly much of the market share will be taken by e-books, however they will by no means cover the whole book market. After all, people will never sacrifice their health to little convenience or low prices.
After what has been discussed above, we may draw the conclusion that despite the widely accepted e-books, the printed books will never fade away.
