Hello my friend. While I cant share any books about this, I can share my experience with you as an HBS graduate in 2005. There are two aspects to your question. One is what should you SAY you will do when you graduate, in your MBA app. The other is what you will actually DO when you graduate. ? And the two do NOT need to be the same.
First of all, how big is your company? If it is big enough, and growing, then ideally you can say that you will rejoin the business. You will be the CEO and you will GROW the thing to be very big, and very successful. This will be great for schools to hear, since they love CEOs, and they know that you will be employed. But this will of course only work if the biz is big, good, impressive, etc. If not, you will want to branch out a bit. You could talk about many things tho—I would consider consulting. This is the broadest way to get more experience—lots of fields, experiences—THAT is the training that you would need. That is what they will wanna hear—that is the good stuff. If you cant go straight back into your biz, you could do consulting.
Now, as for what you actually choose to do…that is of course up to you. But these two options will work nicely for your MBA apps…
