我查过前人的讨论，别人的观点供你参考。

1. Exhaust在这里是一次性、非持续性动作，“用完了”的意思，不是“不断消耗”的意思。因此用现在进行时不适合。

2. Exhausting的语法主语是主句主语，Alaska。但是原句子中没并有是Alaska用的意思。

还有 后面的 its 指代不清

代词指代不清的时候最有效的方法就是根据逻辑意思用名词把代词换掉，据说老美的思维比较简单，哪错就改哪。
