Dandan, normally a university has a phd program should be a research university. However, some universities that do not have a phd program could be research university. It depends on the requirement of getting tenure. Normally, research universities require professors to get at least one top tier journal (some require six!) but balance (research and teaching) universities and teaching universities do not have this requirement. It is obvious to know the nature of the universities when you have job interview. Research universities focus on asking research questions and teaching universities put emphasis on teaching questions. |
