Main Duties: You will be part of the leadership of the UK’s science and innovation work in China, responsible for engaging with key government stakeholders, research institutes and companies to develop mutually beneficial co-operation. You will provide policy reports and advice on Chinese science and technology developments including some work related to health, biotechnology or life sciences. You will have opportunity to work with partners to identify and develop new collaboration projects. You will organise senior visits and facilitate workshops, and potentially have line management responsibilities. The role involves opportunity to gain a broad range of experience in a field of high priority for the UK and China. The post offers travel opportunities to the UK and training and development opportunities, which can be tailored to address the needs of candidates who can demonstrate their potential to meet the requirements. Required skills and experience: Essential: - highly motivated self starter, showing energy in overcoming obstacles and capable of working independently
- sound research skills, being competent at providing written and spoken briefings, including your own analysis of Chinese policy and science and technology developments
- adept at communicating, influencing and developing effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders and officials including at senior levels
- written and spoken fluency in Mandarin and English, including the ability to write reports in English that draw on texts and conversations in Chinese
- practical working knowledge of the research, science and technology system in China - minimum of five years’ experience (can include study time / PhD training), working for a government agency, research institute, university or company
- team working, showing flexibility in adapting your role to needs of the work and building co-operative working relationships

- You will have extensive operational contacts and networks in the public and/or private sectors, or be able to demonstrate ability to develop them
Desirable: - Project and/or programme management experience, including handling of budgets
- International relations experience

The Gross Salary for this position before all deductions is 14,881/month. The successful candidate will be employed under locally employed staff conditions within the British Embassy.
