题目:In some classes, course grades are based on solely on exams, while in other classes, grades are based more on class participation. Which type of grading do prefer? Expain. I have an extreme preference to courses in which professors grade the students based more on class participation rather than merely on exams. It is not only because I tend to get better grades on these courses but also, technically speaking, grading refering to class participation is a more scientific way. The most crucial reason is grading regarding students' participation can help the students with their intergrating skills. If a student expects a better grade on such a course, he or she has to do more than simply conquer a test paper. The student has to do a lot preparations which would, probably, have nothing to do with the exams. However, these preparations will not end up in vain. On the contrary, they provide the student a broader vision in the domain. Many of the participation activities also offer the students great opportunity to improve their lecturing abilities or can help them be better confronting more practical problems. All these above can arm the students with better skills. As it comes to grading, the essential topic is to be fair to all the
students. Yes, exams can give a hand to the teachers on telling who masters the courses better, but, not exactly. Some students may get a terrible grade due to all kinds of reasons which could lead a single mistake in the exam. Some may feel nervous for their character, some might have caught a cold just before the exam, or a student just got his mind stuck into a dilemma temperally...Students experience these situations all the time. That makes grading only on examination a bad approach. Another reason is advocating participation in class give merits to the class itself. Teacher and students will be enjoying communicating better and the class is more likely to take on an atmosphere of interaction which would certainly trigger a stronger interest in the students on the course. Better class participation actually brings about a great deal of benefits to both the teachers and the students. Take this grading issue deeper, why students have to be graded? Because a nice grade boosts better understanding of the course. However, we also have to admit that examination is actually a passive way to achieve this very goal. Nothing teaches a student better than the craving deep down in his heart for the knowledge he could get from the course. Surely, this craving is not cultivated by exams.
