My partner and I are helping a couple of applicants this year for 2009 MBA. And I agree, you have to do most of work yourself. However, with a good consulting service, you can often achieve better results and get there faster. For example, we work with applicants to discover their uniqueness and achievements that they may not realize or know how to show it effectively through essays. When I applied to MBA schools, I asked for help with my resume. Through conversations regarding my experience, the person recommended Duke, which I didn't include in my consideration list at the time. But that's the school I eventually went and I got scholarship too. In short, I recommend you analyze your weakest points in an application and get help in that particular area.
