No matter you want to apply 10-30 or top 10, AWA really doesn't play any role in the application review. I experienced many Q&A with AdComs, some of them say they don't even look at it at all. If you have a strong essay, it will show your writing capability in much broad and deep way. And your low AWA will not cast any doubt about whether your strong essays were written by someone else. AdCom will use the interview to test whether you verbal communication skill is consistent with your essay writting.
