To LZ:
I really feel sympathetic to your situation--- you must have been under great pressure.
But, to be honest, most doctoral programs in b-shcools in the US are really competitive; since you don't have any research experience or related backgound, it may be even harder to get into a decent one. If you really want a research career, here are my advice: the first job is to retake TOEFL; second, you can ask the professors who are writing your recommendation letters to endorse your academic capability and research potential; third, forming some specific research questions and try to contact the faculty members in the schools you are going to apply (be sure to read at least some of their papers before you email them). At last, be ready to accept the worst situation and do not give up. Even if you don't get into any Phd program this year, this doesn't mean that there is no hope in the future.
If the worst situation does happen-- that is, you end up with no PhD offer this time, there are still some things you can do--1. apply to some master's in statistics or marketing research, or 2. if you get into a good MBA program this year, then choose the marketing track and talk to the faculty members there about your research interest and your intention to get into a PhD program after graduation. One senior student in my department got into the PhD program by adopting the second strategy-- she talked to a professor about her research interest while she was doing her MBA in our school, and that professor is her advisor now.
Best of luck! |
