I think his background is ok, not strong though. On the other hand, most of the applicants won't have very good background in academic/research field.

TOEFL is definitely a minus.

And another problem,as I subtly pointed out, is his determination. I don't think one can write outstanding essays for both MBA and PhD application.

RESEARCH牛人啊

for applicants, it really depends on what creteria apply.

if the applicant excels in RESEARCH, there are few needs for him to get into a PhD program.

You can simply read the journals, and almost none author is at applicant status, so to speak.

I admit there are some guys who did excellent jobs before application. However, such cases are rare.

The problem of LZ is his academic background. However, he come with a degree of law without any math or engineering basis and psychology groundwork, either of which is the right equipment for a marketing phd admission. I have to agree the dependence on the criterion the program claims, but under the circumstances, LZ has little chance to be enrolled by a phd program. On the contrary, based on his work experience and the GMAT score, I believe that he deserves an offer from a top 30 MBA program.

To LZ:

I really feel sympathetic to your situation--- you must have been under great pressure.

But, to be honest, most doctoral programs in b-shcools in the US are really competitive; since you don't have any research experience or related backgound, it may be even harder to get into a decent one. If you really want a research career, here are my advice: the first job is to retake TOEFL; second, you can ask the professors who are writing your recommendation letters to endorse your academic capability and research potential; third, forming some specific research questions and try to contact the faculty members in the schools you are going to apply (be sure to read at least some of their papers before you email them). At last, be ready to accept the worst situation and do not give up. Even if you don't get into any Phd program this year, this doesn't mean that there is no hope in the future.

If the worst situation does happen-- that is, you end up with no PhD offer this time, there are still some things you can do--1. apply to some master's in statistics or marketing research, or 2. if you get into a good MBA program this year, then choose the marketing track and talk to the faculty members there about your research interest and your intention to get into a PhD program after graduation. One senior student in my department got into the PhD program by adopting the second strategy-- she talked to a professor about her research interest while she was doing her MBA in our school, and that professor is her advisor now.

Best of luck!
