employment costs rose 3.5 percent, where
employment costs consist of salary costs and fringe benefit
costs. If salary costs rose 3 percent and
fringe-benefit costs rose 5.5 percent during 1993,
then fringe-benefit costs represented what percent of
employment costs at the beginning of 1993?
(A) 16.5%
(B) 20%
(C) 35%
(D) 55%
(E) 65%

就是求比值的题目。说cost分为2个costs。然后总的上升了3.5%。其中一个cost也就是工资上升了3%。另一个上升了5.5%。问你上升了5.5%的这个cost在总的cost上升前也就是1993年年初占了总的cost的百分比为多少。就是求比值。。

简单来说就是employment costs包含salary costs 和fringe-benefit costs，因为salary costs 和fringe-benefit costs所占的比重不同，所以会带来不同的employment costs。
设fringe-benefit costs=x
3(1-x)+5.5x=3.5
化简后x=1/5=0.2
