Teaching and learning are an open-ended, all-inclusive terms, which by no means have any specific or formalized style. When it comes to the ways to give and attend lectures, some students contend that teachers do all of the talking in class, while others, like me, prefer classes where talking are participated by students too. Among various merits about the latter way, three conspicuous reasons would substantiate my view as follows.
The first plain truth, as I am presenting here, is that students would concentrate easily thus learn better in class if they do some of the talking with the teacher. For one thing, it is known that concentration plays an important in how much you gain from the teacher’s talking. And as young adolescents, students cannot always keep their minds in check. If they could participate in the teacher’s talking, expressing their ideas and discussing them with the teacher and the peer students, they will easily be appealed to the lecture. Thus, to do some talking by students is an effective way to improve the efficiency of classes.
Furthermore, to do some talking is not only instrumental for student to concentrate on the lecture, but often conducive to their creativity and other abilities. Education, as an essential private for citizens, should grant students critical thinking and creativity rather than only some scientific theories or some historic events. While what the teacher talks in class often some basic facts or theorems, what and how the students think are more important to successful education. In this sense, that young students stand out, question the teacher and interact with others is indispensable to their enlightenment. Knowledge is built with facts just as a house is built with bricks, but a collection of facts cannot be called knowledge since any more than a pile of bricks can hardly called a house. Talking in class is critical for students to learn knowledge and cultivate creativity like learning to build their own houses with bricks.
Last but not least, behind my view that student should do some talking in class lies the fact that talking of both the teacher and the students would form a friendly atmosphere. Good teachers are also good friends of students who are willing to listen to their opinions and solve their questions in time. To achieve this goal, no other way would be more efficient than talking with each other in class.
Admittedly, that the teachers do all the talking has its own advantage since class time is limited and this way will impart more things to students. But compared with this way, I still side with the students who prefer to do some talking in class because it can improve the efficiency, cultivate students’ thinking habits and create a friendly atmosphere.
