1. Tell me about yourself. It would be helpful to address where you go to school, what are you

doing, and what do you like about what you are doing. My name is VA. I am from India. I had my bachelors in Process Engineering. I have an MBA with major in Finance. Upon graduation, I worked with a retail bank as a Credit Analyst and was later promoted to the scale of Manager. I passed the CFA Level 1 in 2013. I wanted to learn about stock valuation. Hence, I went on to pursue masters in finance from Villanova School of Business. I am currently working with BF partners, a non-profit Venture Capital firm, as a Portfolio
Analyst. My job deals with monitoring more than 150 startups in which BF has invested in. Interesting part of the job is that, I get to value private companies, which is a bit different from public stocks. I also get to price warrants. I also work towards compliance. So far, so good, except for the pay 

Although, I am enjoying this learning process, I don’t see much future here. Of late, I have started to like Investment banking, especially for the rigorous training the analysts undergo for the initial 1-2 years. So, that’s a prospective career path for me. However, I am open to anything related to stock/business valuation and financial modelling.

2. Why do you go to graduate school in Finance? Which school did you apply? Why?

The reason, I wanted to pursue masters in finance was to gain better understanding of the core concepts of finance. I got a little bit of exposure to it from my MBA and CFA level 1. But, I wanted to dedicate myself to learning about finance. Hence, I wanted to do MSF program. I applied to quite a lot of schools. The things that worked against me were, I didn’t take the GMAT, but took the GRE (Idiot!). And also, I don’t have an undergrad in arts- economics or finance or BBA. Anyway, I applied to UT Austin, USC, Washington State- St Louis, Vanderbilt, Purdue, SMU-Cox, Villanova, MIT-Sloan, and Princeton.

I targeted all the schools with decent enough OCR. I got admits from Nova, cox, purdue. Of course, I chose Nova for the quality of the program and its proximity to NYC.

3. How many people helped you revise your resume?

There have been quite a few review sessions on school. Number would be---about 5-7(may be)

4. How many interviews did you have?

I have had about 5 interviews before I accepted the offer from BF

5. How did you network with others?

I would find them on LinkedIn and send them a message for a brief talk. Some kind people would respond. I would tell them my story and my ambitions. Because of my VISA situation, many would express their helplessness. At least, we can learn about their work days and figure out what we really want to do in the future.

6. How did you prepare for interview?

Read Vault Guides, questions on sites such as Glassdoor etc.

7. Could you tell us something about your work?

My job deals with monitoring more than 150 startups in which BF has invested in. Interesting part of the job is that, I get to value private companies, which is a bit different from public stocks. I also

get to price warrants. I also work towards compliance

8. What would you recommend other people to do when preparing for interviews?

Read the Vault guides. For most of the interviews, this would be sufficient. Get current about financial world affairs. Prepare for a short pitch to sell yourself in 2-3 minutes. Have an idea about what you expected from the job you applied for and how it would help you in your career goals. If you have an interview for ER, have a couple of stocks ready to pitch. Some companies might also ask for a stock to short

9. What tips would you offer to international students?

Best way to approach is to network right from the start of the program. Target bigger companies. Also, it couldn’t hurt to have certifications listed on your resume. These would give you some edge over others.

Also, get an internship, even if it’s unpaid. If it’s in IB, better chances to get full time offers with bigger banks.
