Passage 55
Some observers have attributed the dramatic growth
in temporary employment that occurred in the United
states during the 1980’s to increased participation in
the workforce by certain groups, such as first-time or
(5)  reentering workers, who supposedly prefer such arrange-
ments. However, statistical analyses reveal that demo-
graphic changes in the workforce did not correlate with
variations in the total number of temporary workers.
Instead, these analyses suggest that factors affecting
(10)    employers account for the rise in temporary employ-
ment. One factor is product demand: temporary
employment is favored by employers who are adapting
to fluctuating demand for products while at the same
time seeking to reduce overall labor costs. Another
(15)    factor is labor’s reduced bargaining strength, which
allows employers more control over the terms of
employment. Given the analyses, which reveal that
growth in temporary employment now far exceeds the
level explainable by recent workforce entry rates of
(20)     groups said to prefer temporary jobs, firms should be
discouraged from creating excessive numbers of tem-
    porary positions. Government policymakers should
consider mandating benefit coverage for temporary
employees, promoting pay equity between temporary
(25)    and permanent workers, assisting labor unions in orga-
nizing temporary workers, and encouraging firms to
assign temporary jobs primarily to employees who
    explicitly indicate that preference.

7. The passage mentions each of the following as an
appropriate kind of governmental action EXCEPT
  (A) getting firms to offer temporary employment
primarily to a certain group of people.
  (B) encouraging equitable pay for temporary and
     permanent employees
  (C) facilitating the organization of temporary workers by
     labor unions.
  (D) establishing guidelines on the proportion of
temporary workers that firms should employ
  (E) ensuring that temporary workers obtain benefits
     from their employers.

5. The first sentence in the passage suggests that the
observers mentioned in line 1 would be most likely to
   predict which of the following?
  (A) That the number of new temporary positions would
decline as fewer workers who preferred temporary
     employment entered the workforce.
  (B) That the total number of temporary positions would
increase as fewer workers were able to find
     permanent positions
  (C) That employers would have less control over the
terms of workers’ employment as workers
      increased their bargaining strength.
  (D) That more workers would be hired for temporary
      positions as product demand increased.
  (E) That the number of workers taking temporary
positions would increase as more workers in any
given demographic group entered the workforce.

前面说的first time or reentering workers就是demographic group,前后呼应。老观点说,因为first time or reentering workers导致dramatic growth in 临时工作,所以选E

但E认为any    given    demographic    group    的增加,会使暂时工作增加

比较以上两个看法,区别在于any    given    demographic    group     不能等同于certain    groups who    supposedly    prefer    temporary employment

尽管语气上略有差别,但是原文强调employees    who explicitly    indicate    that    preference

这与a的选项中a certain kind of group 是对应的

D establishing    guidelines    on    the    proportion    of
temporary    workers    that    firms    should    employ

(A)That    the    number    of    new    temporary    positions    would
decline    as    fewer    workers    who    preferred    temporary
                    employment    entered    the    workforce.

我另有意见,我认为A中说positions会减少,这是不恰当的,应该说the workers who are willing to take temporary positions会减少,是先有了人,然后才有positions,(可参看下文公司更愿意雇佣临时工,    而且这是超出工人意愿的,Given    the    analyses,    which    reveal    that
growth    in    temporary    employment    now    far    exceeds    the
level    explainable    by    recent    workforce    entry    rates    of
(20)        groups    said    to    prefer    temporary    jobs。)

1.同意D:positions, 很重要,我也选了A,但是看到这里才更清楚,A还有一个问题,就是即使这里是workers代替了position,在逻辑上依然有问题,原文说dramatic growth  in temporary employment(用B表示) that occurred in the United
states during the 1980’s to increased participation in  the workforce by certain groups(用A表示)

2.Given the analyses, which reveal that
growth in temporary employment now far exceeds the
level explainable by recent workforce entry rates of
(20)  groups said to prefer temporary jobs。) Given the analyses, which reveal that growth in temporary employment (that) now far exceeds the level (that is ) explainable by recent workforce entry rates of groups (who) said to prefer temporary jobs.

3. 第7题,我开始也选了D,从字面对应, 应该就是D,因为A中,to a certain group of people=employees who explicitly indicate that preference.
