To avoid a hostile takeover attempt, the board of directors of Wellco, Inc., a provider of life and health insurance, planned to take out large loans and use them to purchase a publishing company, a chocolate factory, and a nationwide chain of movie theaters. The directors anticipated that these purchase initially would plunge the corporation deep into debt, rendering it unattractive to those who wanted to take it over, but that steadily rising insurance rates would allow the company to pay off the debt within five years. Meanwhile, revenues from the three new businesses would enable the corporation as a whole to continue to meet its increased operating expenses. Ultimately, according o the directors’ plan, the diversification would strengthen the corporation by varying the sources and schedules of its annual revenues. Which of the following, assuming that all are equally possible, would most enhance the chances of the plan’s success? (A) A widespread drought decreases the availability of cacao beans, from which chocolate is manufacture, diving up chocolate prices worldwide. (B) New government regulations require a 30 percent across-the-board rate rollback of all insurance companies, to begin immediately and to be completed within a five-year period. (C) Congress enacts a statute, effective after six months, making it illegal for any parent not to carry health insurance coverage for his or her child. (D) Large-screen televisions drop dramatically in price due to surprise alterations in trade barriers with Japan; movie theater attendance dwindles as a consequence. (E) A new, inexpensive process is discovered for making paper pulp, and paper prices fall to 60 percent of their former level.
Which of the following, assuming that all are equally possible, would most enhance the chances of the plan’s success? Which of the following would most enhance the chances of the plan’s success? (中间插入语不用看了, assuming that all are equally possible, )抓住两个要素:1、plan说明是一个措施达目的,2、enhance支持. To avoid a hostile takeover attempt, the board of directors of Wellco, Inc., a provider of life and health insurance, planned to take out large loans and use them to purchase a publishing company, a chocolate factory, and a nationwide chain of movie theaters. 首先发现:“To avoid”,则说明是目的,点到为止,迅速向后看:the board of directors这是主语;“of Wellco, Inc., a provider of life and health insurance,”这里面迅速扫过,只发现一个有用的词:insurance. 再看谓语“planed to take out large loans ”知道了措施已经来了。 再往后看,找找这个措施具体是什么?“take out large loans and use them to purchase a publishing company, a chocolate factory, and a nationwide chain of movie theaters.” 这里的有用信息只有:“loans”“purchase”“publishing company, a chocolate factory, and a nationwide chain of movie theaters.”。 The directors anticipated that these purchase initially would plunge the corporation deep into debt, rendering it unattractive to those who wanted to take it over, but that steadily rising insurance rates would allow the company to pay off the debt within five years. “The directors anticipated that"是说他们估计。 。注意!(核心的内容,我一般就把它视为美女一般,瞳孔放大) “these purchase initially would plunge the corporation deep into debt, rendering it unattractive to those who wanted to take it over” 这种收购会使产生巨大的负债,进而使得公司对恶意接管者没有兴趣。 “but that steadily rising insurance rates would allow the company to pay off the debt within five years.” Meanwhile, revenues from the three new businesses would enable the corporation as a whole to continue to meet its increased operating expenses. 往后发现:revenues would meet operating expenses. Ultimately, according to the directors’ plan, the diversification would strengthen the corporation by varying the sources and schedules of its annual revenues. 发现一个Ultimately这个承接词,知道还是在承接前面的内容,态度依然未变,往后看:diversification would strengthen ... by varying the sources and schedules of its annual revenues.以前的经验告诉我,by doing的内容,比前面的内容更重要,后面是前面的途径,是前面动词“strengthen”的先决条件,所以,更加注意后面的内容“varying the sources and schedules of its annual revenues”。 A)10秒;A widespread drought decreases the availability of cacao beans, from which chocolate is manufacture, diving up chocolate prices worldwide. New government regulations require a 30 percent across-the-board rate rollback of all insurance companies, to begin immediately and to be completed within a five-year period. Congress enacts a statute, effective after six months, making it illegal for any parent not to carry health insurance coverage for his or her child. Large-screen televisions drop dramatically in price due to surprise alterations in trade barriers with Japan; movie theater attendance dwindles as a consequence. A new, inexpensive process is discovered for making paper pulp, and paper prices fall to 60 percent of their former level. B答案始终不得其解,不管它了,看C,花5秒看一下文章,发现了第二句but之后的东东,“steadily rising insurance rates would allow the company to pay off the debt within five years.”
