Reserchers cut the leaves of sagebrush (a
kind of bush growing up in desert) plants to mimic the damage caused
by insects. The sagebrush plants responded to release a kind of
chemical as an warning signal. In response, the other plants nearby get
the signal and release their own chemical that makes their leaves less
tasty to plant-eating insects.
