Postpone 1 year?

Hi,

I would like to ask your advice whether I can ask the school to postpone my enrollment to the Ph D program for one year because my family reason. I feel that it may not be possilbe but does anyone know some successful case? Any advice and comments are appreciated. Thanks.

hehe, I know several cases of deferring. you have to write up a very sincere letter though.

Most of friends have personal reasons,e.g. finish current PHD before going for Biz PHD, Parents are sick and have to stay around....

funnytiger, the cases you talked about are regarding to MS or PhD?

I am considering to defer my enrollment for half an year. But I am afraid that I may lose the financial support. And the other reason is that ususally, we need to take the comprehensive exam one year after we enrolled in the B-School based what we learned in the first year.

Could you explain the cases you learned in more detail?

The cases are PHD and JD cases. None of people I know lost fin. support in the past. basically, they  will treat you the first year when you officially enroll. Admission has nothing to do with your student status.

just recently, my friend deferred UC berkeley, the reason is that she wants to finish her current degree. She wrote an email. In 24 hours, the adcom replied and granted. it is just as easy as that.

it depends on the type of scholarship. if it is fellowship (you get money without commitment to work), there is a chance they will not grant you next year. But for assistantship (you have to work to get paid), usually it is very easy to shift it to next year.

If you are going to a highly ranked school, you should not worry about the scholarship at all. Usually the business schools are well funded, as long as you don't tarnish the relationship between you and school, they will give you the money. saying it is easy, you have to write a great letter when ask for deferral.
