題目:Scientists and other researchers should focus their research on areas that are likely to benefit the greatest number of people.
文章:這一次就憋出來490多個字,有關係么。。。 The main responsibility of a scientist or a researcher is to think of ways that can improve human society and benefit our daily lives. However, that does not lead to a conclusion that they should focus on certain research that may beneficial to majority of people. It might be hard for any one to define which research is beneficial to which kind of people. Scientists under different political systems may act differently on specific research programs. Under a political system of authoritarianism, the research of scientists and researchers are absolutely subjected to the government. In these countries like Saudi Arabia or Ethiopia, the government is indifferent to their citizen's need, they only depend on exporting their natural resources like crude oil on maintaining the national financial development. So it maybe unrealisitic for scientists under such political system to do research on those benefit to majority of the people. All they should to is to cater to the government's need.
Nevertheless, the scene might be different in a democratic society, where human right is highly praised. Scientists and researchers are relatively free to choose anything they want to reseach. From theory physics to literature. Reasearchers do not have to adhere to research that is definitely be benefit to majority of people. A research on a novel in Victoria Age might have nothing to do with majority of people, but it is essential for the diversity of culture in a democracy political system. Still, there are some less developed countries or developing countries which also maintain a political system as democracy, under such circumstances, scientists and researchers still have to do research beneficial to majority of people in that in these countries, people's basic living conditions remain to be a great problem. Researchers have to solve these problems before doing other research.
The underlying assumption of the statement is that whether a research benefits most people is defineable. This may be true when it comes to our daily life regarding the computer technology or office management system, whose research is quite valuable every time when it is improved. The invention of the iPad and the apps like keynotes save us a lot of time for carrying a big computer when doing a presentation at school or at office. It seems that scientists and researchers could only do relative research on areas beneficial to our life, but giving it a second thought, where does all these research come from? Computer technology is based on arithmetic and electronic, subjects that seem a little far away from our every day life. But it is precisely these basic theories that formed complicated technology. Any research which seemed far away from us can be directly or indirectly connected with the common appliances.
Scientific research or social research are both important for the improvement of the society, it is not the scientists or researchers who determine which area to study but the circumstances and environment they are in. |
