高手们,帮我分析一下,这题为什么选E,是怎么个道理啊????

99. Which of the following most logically completes the
argument?
The irradiation of food kills bacteria and thus retards
spoilage. However, it also lowers the nutritional value
of many foods. For example, irradiation destroys a
signifi cant percentage of whatever vitamin B1 a food
may contain. Proponents of irradiation point out that
irradiation is no worse in this respect than cooking.
However, this fact is either beside the point, since
much irradiated food is eaten raw, or else misleading,
since .

(A) many of the proponents of irradiation are food
distributors who gain from foods’ having a
longer shelf life

(B) it is clear that killing bacteria that may be
present on food is not the only effect that
irradiation has

(C) cooking is usually the fi nal step in preparing food
for consumption, whereas irradiation serves to
ensure a longer shelf life for perishable foods

(D) certain kinds of cooking are, in fact, even more
destructive of vitamin B1 than carefully
controlled irradiation is

(E) for food that is both irradiated and cooked, the
reduction of vitamin B1 associated with either
process individually is compounded

107. Last year all refuse collected by Shelbyville city
services was incinerated. This incineration generated
a large quantity of residual ash. In order to reduce the
amount of residual ash Shelbyville generates this year
to half of last year’s total, the city has revamped its
collection program. This year city services will
separate for recycling enough refuse to reduce the
number of truckloads of refuse to be incinerated to
half of last year’s number.
Which of the following is required for the revamped
collection program to achieve its aim?
(A) This year, no materials that city services could
separate for recycling will be incinerated.
(B) Separating recyclable materials from materials
to be incinerated will cost Shelbyville less than
half what it cost last year to dispose of the
residual ash.
(C) Refuse collected by city services will contain a
larger proportion of recyclable materials this
year than it did last year.
(D) The refuse incinerated this year will generate no
more residual ash per truckload incinerated than
did the refuse incinerated last year.
(E) The total quantity of refuse collected by
Shelbyville city services this year will be no
greater than that collected last year.

能解释一下这道题是如何选出来的吗?

The first one is similar to 1 + 1 = 2, then 2 > 1.  Study the meaning of "is compounded".

For the second one, the answer is D.  What the stimulus says is that the city will "reduce the
number of truckloads of refuse to be incinerated to half of last year’s number" in order to "reduce the
amount of residual ash Shelbyville generates this year to half of last year’s total." What if this year's truck increases its capacity to twice as much as last year?  Then the city will end up with equal amount of ash in the end.
