New MBA Application Essays Revealed

We have one required essay at the time of submission: Tell us about a recent success you had: How did you accomplish this? Who else was involved? What hurdles did you encounter? What type of impact did this have? (500 words or fewer).

A second short-answer question will be asked of those invited to interview: The mission of the MIT Sloan School of Management is to develop principled, innovative leaders who improve the world and to generate ideas that advance management practice. Please share with us something about your past that aligns with this mission. (250 words or fewer).

We will also continue to ask the open-ended, optional question.

MIT Sloan和就在Charles River对岸的HBS尽管在文化上有很多差异，这两家顶级商学院在选拔优秀学生的手法上逐年创新却是如出一辙的。继2014年推出让无数申请人抓耳挠腮的“以推荐人的角度为自己代言”的论文题目之后，它今年又给申请人出了新的难题。


Required essay：
Sloan是少数不在乎申请人“未来究竟想做什么”的院校之一，它更看重的是申请人的过去。 Sloan招生办主任Dawna Levenson曾经在接受访谈时表示，

简单来说，这是一篇展现leadership的文章。选材上，个人建议申请人重点考虑professional experience，因为职场中人际关系的建立和维系往往较为复杂，你要去解决的问题往往难以逃脱，面临的压力通常较大。要注意的是，事件发生的时间最好是最近三年内（对，Sloan曾经明确这样要求，“recent”的意思可以这样理解）。此外，这个经历之所以被称为“success”，一定不能是你不费吹灰之力就完成的，而应该是你被tested，做了一些以往没有尝试过的努力，stretch了自己的。（可参考Sloan在2013年的申请题目：Describe a time when you pushed yourself beyond your comfort zone）最后，要献给Sloan这样一所“实干型”的学校，你的文章中要重点叙述的不是situation，不是what you felt，不是thinking process，而是你的action，action，action。重要的事情说三遍。

Interview invite essay：
这个题目Sloan曾在2013和2014使用了两届，今年在措辞上做了轻微的改动（主要是把“based on examples of past work and activities”缩写为“something”），继续保留给收到面试的这部分同学，可见学校对于这个题目还是青睐有加的。不过，由于字数从之前的500字缩减了一半，可以说，写作难度增加了。

首先要提醒各位申请人在写Essay阶段就应该考虑到将来收到面试、要写这篇的情况，由此去strategically安排你的whole package：假如你的required essay选择了professional story，那么可以预先为这题准备好一个personal/community story，不要等收到面试再去临时抱佛脚。至于选择什么题材才符合要求，（学校这个mission表述出来其实也是略冗长）如果一定要选一个关键词，个人建议申请人围绕“innovative”来写，表现你的独立思考和创新能力，这是Sloan非常看重的个人品质。写完你的故事是第一步，第二步则要align with the school’s mission，简单来说就是讲清楚“how you will contribute to Sloan”，此处就需要一些具体详细的school research了。
