我终于搞懂了：
In virtually all types of tissue in every animal species, dioxin induces the production of enzymes that are the organism's attempt to metabolize, or render harmless, the chemical irritant.
这句话补充完全+正常顺序是这样的：
In virtually all types of tissue in every animal species, dioxin induces the production of enzymes that are the organism's attempt to metabolize the chemical irritant, or attempt to render the chemical irritant harmless.
1. render sth harmless，使。。无害；也可以写成 render harmless sth
2. 句子中首先把attempt to 并到了一起，后面跟了两个作用的描述（实际上这两个描述都是同一个作用）
3. 正因为新陈代谢/使无害的对象都是chemical irritant，因此又来一个合并省略。
4. 因此可以把render（sth）harmless 看做句子中的插入语。
整体翻译如下：
在各种动物品种不同的组织器官中，dioxin都会使enzymes产生。 enzymes是器官试图把化学刺激新陈代谢或化解掉时产生的。
也就是：动物器官产生enzymes，是为了把化学刺激降解掉，这种enzymes是由dioxin引发的。

有些疑惑最后那个the chemical irritant所代表的成分，不知道是不是同位语，对前面enzyme的n同位语，同求大神解答

另外英文句子不一定要翻译才能更好的理解，原文才是最通顺的

我还是不明白，如果是同位语的话是什么意思？

the chemical irritant 就是指enzyme.是最后一个对enzyme的总结解释性质的同位语，前面写的enzyme的两个作用，attemptt  to metabolize和render harmless .最后总结了enzyme是化学刺激物，同位语格式相当于n+that  blablabla  ,n.的形式

or 的这个部分是插入语不看也可以，插入语从来不影响语义，做题时可直接跳过。 整个划线答案是修饰定语。 翻译时应理解XXX的enzymes. 直译过来就是一种能够新陈代谢化学刺激物的酶，定语表功能。

LZ的理解有误，是因为你把这个修饰语用来表目的了，所以怎么翻译都是不通的。

个人意见希望指教。
