Don't know NYU. But live in New York area, everything plan to be the most expensive in U.S. Doesn't include Chinatown kinds of living. Say regular standard. If don't have any else as income, can go to Chinatown to shopping food stuff. save a lot of money. the subway each trip is $1.5-$5. but good thing is you don't need a car in NY. Most people in NY downtown or midtown don't own a car. I guess around $800-$1000 for a single bedroom apartment or shared for $400-$500. A lot of students I know they share apartment. You still get your own room, just sharing kitchen and bathroom.  but planning on $40-$50 for cellphone and other $300-$400 at least for other cost of living each month. I would say least you need $1000 each month in NY. In new York there is no up limit.
