one of my chinese friends who works for e&y in here the US says that a lot of e&y employees don't want to stay in the company for more that 3 years if they are not CPAs. even if you have a cpa, it takes long long time to be a partner. however, if you could become a partner, you won't worry about your income anymore.
another american girl i know from PriceWaterHouse also has not intention to stay there for long because the high work pressure and low pay. you've got to work for 60-70 hours per week in tax season. She is trying to find a local firm or go back to school to finish her phd.
But the expereince from Big 4 will give you the leverage to find a better job since recruiters may think "well, if big 4 hired this guy, basically, he must have some qualifications".
