According to scholars, the earliest writing was probably not a direct rendering of speech, but was more likely to begin as a separate and distinct symbolic system of communication, and only later merged with spoken language.

A was more likely to begin as
B more than likely began as
C more than likely beginning from
D it was more than likely begun from
E it was more likely that it began

I'm fine that choice B is the correct answer.

<1>
OG说This sentence is a comparison in which probably not x is balanced by but more than likely y.
比较Theagency is NOT a fully independententity BUT INSTEAD derives itsauthority from Congress. (note that the verb isand derives are parallel.) - Manhatthan
这种平行看上去怪怪的,毕竟was是在not前面的,not后面是个名词(rendering of speech/a fully independent entity),那为什么不是BUT后面加名词使他平行呢?是不是加名词变成was not X but Y更好呢?

<2>
Use of the pronoun it makes this construction a main cluase, in which case the comma after communication must be omitted and began must be used to be parallel to merged;

Q1.
楼主可这样理解这个平行:was..., but was...

Q2.
D选项中的it变成形式主语,but后的结构是it was more likely to began...and merged...

如果是按选项说的,probably not x but more than likely y ,那么x和y完全不用平行么,很明显句子里第一个x是名词啊,第二个y变began动词了?
