If you don't have a good background in accounting, you will have a very hard time teaching in the future.  Undergraduate students are easier to handle, but MBA students are harder to please. Many MBA students have previous background in accounting or even have practical experience. When they find you are bullshitting, they are not happy and will give you bad rating.  Some top schools don't care about your teaching as long as your research is top notch.

Top programs do not care much about professional designations and practical experience.  Still you need to convince them why you are interested in accounting.

I think Australia also has a few great programs.
The question is: do you really like accounting?
The answer is very few smart people like accounting.
I don't see myself that smart, yet I really hate accounting.
I have an accounting designation and serval years practical experience.

I am not sure if I am fond of pure accounting stuff like audit or tax...but i think iam probably a research mania,i   like digging problems via logical thinking.I hope I could apply some orthodox research frame to accounting area.
A guy who is doing his acc phd in unc told me that you can be ignorant to debit credit, but you are supposed to be familiar with econometrics and statistics.
I think he thought the way like you,top school may not care about the acc background, though.
But i am the way far off the top programs.....
