插入语也是一个句子，而
most of them as large or larger than Jupiter
并不是一个句子，是独立主格

对于独立主格，唯一正确的理解方式，就是等同为：分号+be动词

原句改写为：

In the past several years, astronomers have detected more than 80 massive planets; most of them are at least as large as Jupiter, circling other stars.

哦哦。那么如果插入的部分不是一个独立主格的形式呢？是不是应该去掉这部分的内容和两个逗号，看做分词限定修饰前面部分？还是就近的句子分析？？？

你举例子说吧 讲概念一会就晕了
这道题就是一个简单的独立主格+ing修饰放到一起而已。。。

1.举个可能不是很恰当的例子~~像这道题的话改成In the past several years, astronomers have detected more than 80 massive planets,which are at least as large as jupiter, circling other stars.这样是不是可以把中间插入的部分去掉，直接看成In the past several years, astronomers have detected more than 80 massive planets circling other stars circling 直接修饰planets?

2.我注意到你说“circling的修饰往前找最近的主语，就是most of them。没有歧义。”分词修饰是找最近的主语?我认为是找前句主句的主语咩~

3.PS:其实我是想举一个插入语是个完整句子的例子，然后问问完整的插入语部分是省掉呢还是circling修饰插入语的主语，可是貌似举例子有点困难。。

4.看到分词修饰问题我想到了独立主格的问题，貌似其实",ing"和",with..."做的成分是相似的，都是修饰前句作状语。麻烦看下我一直存在的问题
Visitors to the park have often looked up into the leafy canopy and saw monkeys sleeping on the branches, whose arms and legs hang like socks on a clothesline.
A. saw monkeys sleeping on the branches, whose arms and legs hang
B. saw monkeys sleeping on the branches, whose arms and legs were hanging
C. saw monkeys sleeping on the branches, with arms and legs hanging
D. seen monkeys sleeping on the branches, with arms and legs hanging
E. seen monkeys sleeping on the branches, whose arms and legs have hung
这里的with arms and legs hanging显然是修饰monkey的，所以是不是就如你所说的和分词相同，with 也是找最近的主语修饰？

四个问题有点多，麻烦大神解答了

1. 改写后这个句子真心很难理解，这里circling倒是感觉是在修饰planets的，不过用了这么复杂的句式的话更像是修饰整个句子的（但含义上又不通）。。。ps. which这个从句真心不是“插入语”，again，插入语是个完整的句子，比如莫名其妙出现个I think什么的。。

2. 不一定是主句，谁近算谁的。

3. 看到真题了再说吧。。

4. 这个题跟ing修饰没关系。。。这里分明出现了新的主语，所以是独立主格。独立主格可以有with也可以没有。独立主格还是同样的做法，改写成分号+be动词：

以下这些句子都是一样的：
Visitors to the park have often looked up into the leafy canopy and saw monkeys sleeping on the branches; arms and legs were hanging like socks on a clothesline.

Visitors to the park have often looked up into the leafy canopy and saw monkeys sleeping on the branches, their arms and legs hanging like socks on a clothesline.

其实如果没有C选项的话我觉得B也说得过去，我没什么绝对的理由排除B，除了C更正确且GMAT偏好独立主格。

4.你这里说出现新的主语指的是arms and legs 吗？ with+宾语+宾补 只要宾语部分是新的主语就可以用你所说的分词+be 动词结构？ 分号后这部分的内容修饰的是临近的主谓宾，这样理解对吗？

独立主格无所谓修饰谁。。。

刷了几遍Manhattan之后我觉得对于上面大神的解释有点不同理解
我认为中间的most of them at least as large as Jupiter包括两个逗号是插入语部分在分析名词修饰的时候可以把插入语和逗号部分跳过，也就是说circling作定语修饰planets。
