巴斯大学金融硕士想申请英国G5博士求建议~~~！！！

如题，本人今年9月份入学巴斯大学金融硕士（现在还没开始读呢哈），想要申请英国G5或者美国的商学院博士，不知道申请有没有希望啊？不知道应该从什么时候开始联系导师啊？因为英国硕士就1年，按理来说硕士一入学就要开始准备申请了，但现在研究方向啥的完全没有眉目啊，无从下手。。。 还有，就是硕士毕业直接读博好还是先工作1年好？工作一年的好处是申请博士时硕士的成绩和毕业论文能用得上，会对申请有帮助吗？ 请各位前辈指导啊！！

Make sure you really want a PhD / go to industry for work afterwards.
這不是等你差不多畢業才想的問題, 而是你搞碩士申請前就要想好的問題.

P.S. 如果真的是想PhD Finance的人, 我想大多數不會優先考慮一年碩士, 而MSF也很少會出現在其申請清單上.

恩恩~~ 我已经确定啦想要的读PHD~ 因为申请硕士之前没搞清楚TAUGHT 和RESEARCH MASTER的区别~ 现在也挺后悔的~~ 所以想如果毕业先工作一年或做一年RA会不会对申请PHD有帮助呢~~~谢谢啦！

其實不只是taught VS research的分別, 還有的就是MSF的課程本身就不是for academics (PhD) purposes.
一些必要的經濟理論, 和數學基礎都不在其中. 對編程, 和計量的著重也不太足夠. (除非本身數底極度強悍, i mean maths major first hon....with graduate class......)
畢竟MSF是一個career preparation program, and they in general focus more on cash-flow basd (accounting....) financial modeling (corp fina, equity research), which is useless for PhD preparation.

做RA當然有幫助, 不過眾所周知, 英國的大學比較窮, funding不夠用, 而碩士教育, 大多都是開源為主. (你看他們local student讀bachelor也加價幾倍就知道他們窮到甚麼地步...)
在這樣的大環境下, 就算成績再好, 想找RA, 挑戰極大. (and they reserve quite some funded position for UK/EU students.....)

再講, in general, bachelor/master -> PhD -> professor的這一條路上, 正常都是downward trend的, keep到不跌已經很不易, 這關乎intake, supply and demand issue.
建議不要想能由bath進回G5, 能留本校/同級讀PhD已經很不易的了. (I don't mean that's impossible, just mean don't expect that to happen)
而且英國G5(+warwick), 和之後幾家是有一個很明顯的gap (econ & fina research). 最多有三兩家的還不錯的,
而且我印象中在research ranking (tilburg / IDEAS), 我是從來沒見過bath的. 沒猜錯的話, they maybe not be active in the world of academic frontier......(or at most there're one or two actively publishing prof...which means the exposure to different field of the students are very limited)

建議三思, 家人賺錢不易, 多看看有沒有其他可行的選擇.

P.S. 最具操作性的其實應該是, 準備好銀兩(+very good GPA), MSF畢業後, 再讀第二個夠硬的master..........

the key issue is........why PhD, what to expect afterwards...........

if one cannot get into G5, and (for finance) some more school like Warwick Cass and maybe two to three more, it's not that easy to find a research tenture track job at a decent university.........

当初放弃了cass finance啊，来的bath 。。。

well…i guess one the main reason is that cass is much more.expensive?

cass據說funding比較充足(academic)
也是a half target school (for career)

额...其实cass的学费还木有bath高呢....不过毕竟在伦敦~ 租房和生活费都挺高的~~  我选巴斯是看它conditional  offer的条件比cass更严格....就觉得bath更好一些~~不过现在想想也不一定额....

"admission grade" is not a really efficient indicator for quality............

but anyway, MS Finance is seldom a good preparation for PhD Finance......you should had consider a MSc Econ / MSc Econ & Fina instead indeed...........anyway, too late
