Woven baskets characterized by a particular distinctivepattern have previously been found only in the immediate vicinity of theprehistoric village of Palea and therefore were believed to have been made onlyby the Palean people. Recently, however, archaeologists discovered such a"Palean" basket in Lithos, an ancient village across the Brim Riverfrom Palea. The Brim River is very deep and broad, and so the ancient Paleanscould have crossed it only by boat, and no Palean boats have been found. Thusit follows that the so-called Palean baskets were not uniquely Palean.

Write a response in which you discuss whatspecific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how theevidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.

The passage comes tothe conclusion that the so-called Palean baskets were not uniquely Palean becausethey were found in another village, Lithos, across the Brim River from Palea. Theauthor further infers that the Palean people could not have brought the basketto Lithos as there were no way for them to cross the Brim River, which is deepand broad. To support this assertion, the author grounds its argument on the factthat boat, which is considered the only way to cross the river, has not beenfound in this area. To better evaluate the argument, the author would need toprovide concrete evidence on the prehistoric topology surrounding the Paleanvillage, means of transportation for crossing broad and deep rivers at the time,and the correlation of finding boats today with the existence of boat in thetime period of concern.

First of all, theauthor’s conclusion is solely based on the assertion that the Brim River is “verydeep and broad”, posing a barrier for the Paleans to reach the Lithos village. Butthere is no evidence to demonstrate that this was in fact the case in historictimes. It is common knolwedge that the topology of a region can change drasticallyovertime. The fact that the Brim River is deep and broad today does not necessarilysuggest the same in the time of the Palean basket. To the extent that there wasno river at all at that time separating Palean and Lithos or the river wasnarrow and shallow, allowing the Paleans to spread the Palean baskets tosurrounding villages easily, the author’s argument would be seriouslyundermined.

Secondly, theauthor would need to justify the correlation of not finding a boat today withthe assumption that the Paleans did not have boats. Since boats are typicallymade of wood or other perishable meterial, it is natural to expect that theywould not be easily preserved and found today even if they existed hundreds orthousands of years ago. Unless the author is able to provide sufficientevidence to show that the Paleans indeed did not have boats, the argument isunconvincing.

Lastly, even if theBrim River was as described in the passage and that there were no boats, theauthor would need to further substantiate the conclusion by showing that boatwas the only way to cross the Brim River for the Paleans or to examine allother possible transportation methods and rule them out one by one. It is entirelypossible that the Paleans crossed the river using other means or even by takinga detour to cross the river at sections further away from the Palean village.Failing to take into account of all other possible means of crossing the river hampersthe credibility of the argument.

In conclusion, thepassage is not well-supported as it stands. To bolster its argument, the authorwould need to provide facts and analysis to show that the Brim River indeedposed an unformidable natural barrier bewteen Palea and Lithos villages.Furthermore, the author would need to justify the statement that “the ancientPaleans could have crossed it [Brim River] only by boat” or examine allpossible ways for the Palean people to cross the river. Finally, scientificevidence should be provided to prove that the means of transportation ofconcern, whether boat or other means, was not at the utilization of the Pleanpeople, in order to establish the credibility of the argument.
