I have asked this question to the representative when I performed the interview. However, she didn't tell me directly and inform me to search it in their brochure. Anyway, this issue has not been asked by the representative during my application process. I think maybe you can write a e-mail to the adcom if you really need this kind of information for your essay.

i had Situational Leadership II training this year. it talks about leadership styles. might be different from the Simon's definition. just share it for your reference.


Style 1--Directing ( targeting employees with high commitment but low competence)


Style 2--Coaching (--------------------------------------low commitment and some competence)


Style 3--Supporting (------------------------------------variable commitment and moderate competence)


Style 4--Delegating (------------------------------------high commitment and high competence)

I don't think you should do this 'cause they will think you do not do your homework... just download their brochure and read it, the answer is right in the brochure... and I do think this is the "must do" thing no matter which school you apply to...

It is stupid to ask the admission officer during your interview about that question - as it explicitly listed in the school's brochure and also in the school's website. (Sorry I have to say "stupid" as it will hurt your impression during your interview). Simon also claims itself as "where thinker becomes leader".

Anyway, in case you did not read carefully about the brochure or website, here is the information:

Six kinds of leadership as defined by Simon:

  • thought leaders – guiding the group to make a right decision;

  • visionary leaders -  use mission, vision and direction to define the focus of the organization;

  • risk-taking/decisive leaders – face critical changes and challenges to make tough decisions that often lead to dynamic changes;

  • team-building leaders – bring together  a core team of people, positioning them according to their abilities, capitalize on their strengths to achieve a common cause;

  • living symbol leader – demonstrate how to consistently reinformace or teach a desired vision or message

  • legacy leaders – have a talent for building  a legacy
