答案是A，没有异议。最后是独立主格结构作状语表示结果。我对it的用法有点疑问：lower than it would be for isolated birds。it 作为代词的时候，不是只能代替前面事物的本身么？如果要指代同类不同一的事物，应该用的是that吧。我就因为这个原因把A给排掉了。求牛牛解答？

it 指代的是the rate
the rate 这个东西本身并没有变 并没有指向另一种生物的rate(那样的情况需要用that of 新生物)
这里还是指[企鹅燃烧能量的]rate
只不过the rate 前后的具体数值变化了而已
用it 没什么问题
再者 5个选项都用的是it 没有用过 that, 楼主根据什么排除掉的A....

it is 25 percent lower than it would be for isolated birds 我知道前面那个it是指企鹅燃烧能量的rate，但是后面那个it不应该代指isolated birds燃烧能量的rate么？两个rate是同一类的但指的不是同一个东西。在这里that会不会更好一点呢？

最后是不是独立主格结构作状语表示结果，是doing sth做状语，表结果。
觉得it指代的是同类同物，但是是实际情况和一个虚拟情况的比较，但比较的肯定是同一个东西。
你想想：
学MBA的我（现实）和要饭的我（虚拟），是不是同一个我呢？

明白了。it would be...是虚拟语境，看的时候忽略了would的时态，罪过罪过
