Nowadays, there are an increasing number of people addicting into the circle of chasing money, paying less and less attention on thinking about the culture, appreciating the art works, due to the changing, colorful and money-based society. However, we cannot ignore the powerful impact that the art can bring to us. The point is art is a spirit of a county, a nation, a society, a fascinating thing that can bring some changes to the world. In order to refresh the art, in my opinion, the best way is to let artists be supported by the government rather than supported by the artists themselves.
At the first place, the government has the potent ability to conduct a law, a regulation, and quickly gather capital and the labor. Based on these powers, artists can be fully supported and find an easier way to develop their own career, even protect the extinct traditional cultural heritage. And Jianzhi, a Chinese traditional artwork in my hometown, can be a very point to illustrate this point. At the beginning of 2001, Jianzhi was not as famous as it is now, as no one in my hometown had the desire to learn the skill for its low economic benefit. There did exist several artists who wanted to inherit this traditional art but finally in vain, due to the lack of money and the poor fame of Jianzhi. Nevertheless, the artists had to turn to government for help and changes have been taken since 2008. Jianzhi was chosen as the official souvenir of the Beijing Olympic Games. Gradually, Jianzhi becomes increasing famous among Chinese people and the government set a regulation to make sure the successors of Jianzhi with investment. Thus, the success of Jianzhi cannot live without the support of the government.
In addition, the support of the government, in fact, makes the art field more vibrant and competitive, and eventually refreshes the art. The form of support can be conducted as a form of competition, and the artist who wins can receive a large amount of money as his fundamental capital to develop. My friends Kevin is a very talented painter, who also wants to get a sum of bucks to support his art career via the similar competition hold by Brazilian authority annually. Although he failed in that competition, it not stops him to show his strong desire to create more convincing and marvelous to compete with those more talented and great artists in that competition. Because of the smart approach that came up with the government, more and more artists, like Kevin, are motivated and begin to create and design more high-quality works.
Granted, there is a possible factor that the support from the government can threaten artists’ freedom. In other words, artists have little possibility to make the art works based on personal emotion with the limitation the government may set. Nevertheless, what if the works contain unhealthy content that do pretty much harm to the juvenile like violence, sex, dark music, etc.? Compared with the two possible effects, the opportunities and benefits of the support from government obviously overweigh the harm the government’s support brings.
In sum, considering all factors and possibilities mentioned above, I firmly hold that it is the support from government that can truly support the artist and refresh the art field. And no doubt, the support of government is superior to the support of artists for the considerable benefits and a little harm.
