A nation should require all of its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college.
The suggestion from the statement tends to unite all the students from each city, each town or each nationality of a society as a whole for education with a set of unified curriculums. The assumption is that unity will decrease the cost of education, which was the sum of each local government, and be easy to regularize and control.
However, I severely doubt its availability and prospect.
A same national curriculum is much more complicated and difficult to design than we thought. It might be easy to design courses of science, which is regarded as common knowledge, but what about the literature, history, music, sports, and cultural traditions? Though sharing the same country, we don't have the same culture and views about the world.
For those students living in Shanghai and those high developed cities, who have been deeply influenced by the globe as being occupied with multi culture, freedom and human rights have been etched in their mind. They no longer agree the unity and obedience. What they really need for education is,besides the common knowledge, diversity and the truth of the world that can satisfy their desire of exploration and knowledge. Meanwhile, for those students living in towns, small cities and minor nations, cultures differentiate from one after another. They may not care much about a unified curriculum, but they may be annoyed by shaking hands for the first meet, which is so common in other places. They have distinctive histories and myths which are representative and valuable but not present in the unified curriculum for the distinctiveness. I shall ask is it a good education project without any local knowledge ?
If a same national curriculum is deployed by force, students will be the products from a knowledge production line with only what the nation wants them to know. Killing their creativity ,desire of knowledge and exploration, a nation loses a bunch of characteristic individuals who will be artists, musicians, scientists and inventors. Without those typical individuals, a society is getting boring and more and more boring it becomes, the nation will finally lose its place in the world.
Someone may think students still have chances to cultivate their creativity and individuality when they enter colleges. But it's absolutely wrong. College students are busy with their majors for their future jobs, preparing for the rest of their career lives. Their spare time is limited. Besides, it's been proved by authority that the time before going to colleges is the best duration to cultivate creativity and individuality. After that, it is too hard to do the cultivation.
To make a conclusion, we have to been clear about what the point the education before college is. The education before college is to inspire and cultivate students' interests for the world, give them the fundamental knowledge to help them make exploration and teach them the importance of virtue, dream, persistence, friendship, family, justice. What a civilized society need are not the products from a production line, they need groups of humans, with diversity and individuality, to tint the world.
