To understand the most important characteristics of a society, one must study its major cities.
The statement linking a society's major cities to the most important characteristics of a society failed to take all cities and areas as a whole into consideration. Clearly, there are differences in each city of China in the term of law, cultural traditions, languages and etc. An authoritative data shows that punishment is 200 yuan at most for throwing rubbish on the ground in Shanghai, which will be ignored in other cities. Pouring water to others is a way of salutation in Dai nationality, which is a nonsense elsewhere. Each city even each district has its own dialect.
The way in which one tends to understand a society is not restrained and it's surely available to study the major cities of the society. Undoubtedly, major city is the heart of a society, whatever economically or culturally. With its own policy and representativeness, major city is the interface for a new comer to study the society.
However, the most important characteristics of a society includes several elements. Economically, each city in China are different. With the Reform and Opening up, Shanghai has been selected to be the top three cities,as well as Shenzhen and Beijing, in China for long-term development and has caught up with top-class cities in the world. But on the contrary, people coming from the middle of China are still struggling to live with low salary. Owning the most part of population of China, farmers are living far away from major cities. They don't have chance to see Lamborghini,to wear Prada, even afford education. How can one be so certain about the characteristics of a China only by learning its major cities while ignoring the farmers living away from major cities, constituting a big part of its population?
Meanwhile, cultural traditions, playing an important role in learning a society, also differentiate from city to city in China. There are many ways to express welcome in Shanghai. Shaking hands, hugging even a sumptuous dinner are the result of Shanghai's multi culture. But if traveling to Dai nationality in Yunnan, you will be given a barrel of water pouring to you. Because that's how they welcome outsiders, believing water will wash away the dirt, doom and misfortune from you. How would one react to such a salutation if he only knows the culture of Shanghai?
This last example explains how people talk to each other out of the major cities in China. It is common that most people in Shanghai talk in Mandarin. But, in fact, in many areas outside the major cities, people are not able to speak Mandarin. They can only speak their dialect. Those differences between dialects can be regarded as a part of the local social characteristics and local residents habits. How can one neglect languages' impact to the study of a whole society?
Summarily, Shanghai is not China, New York is not America. To understand the most important characteristics of a society, it is necessarily to put an eagle eye on the society and take each area, besides the major cities, into consideration.
