As you know, there are typically three different responsesyou can receive from any MBA admissions committee concerning your application: Admit, Deny or Waitlist.In the next few minutes I will address follow-up steps to each of thesedecisions.

Let’s begin with follow up to an acceptance or admit decision notification. First, I would encourage you torespond to your point of contact on the admissions team, or the general programwith a “Thank You.” Email or handwritten letter is fine, but you want totake the time to acknowledge the decision and also to make a positiveimpression. Some schools send financial aid award decisions along with theadmission notification, but others will send them separately.

This is the time to clarify any outstanding questions youmight have about the individual program, or about financial aid. Note your enrollment deadline,which it typically on the admission letter. That is the date by which you owethe school your decision concerning enrollment. Keep your communication withthe admissions team open and honest through the process, and don’t be afraid toask questions at any point in time.

Now let’s move on to a deny decision. It is never easy to hear you have not gotten in to a school you werehoping to attend. We don’t enjoying having to deny anyone. Next steps after youreceive a deny decision can vary, but here are a few to keep in mind.

1) I suggest following up with a thank you email to your contact on the admissions team. Even though you didn’t get the decision you were hoping for, theyhave still put in a lot of time and work on your application and decision. Itis also good to always leave someone with a good impression of you. You neverknow when you might encounter that person again down the road.

2) Check on the school’s policy for feedback. Some schools will offer feedback onyour admissions package. This can be extremely valuable if you decide toreapply to a school in the following year, and also valuable moving forward toknow where your weak spots may have been with that particular school.

3) Consider reapplying in the following year to your top schools. At that point, youwill have hopefully gotten some feedback and improved your candidacy for yourdesired MBA programs. Different schools vary in their requirements forre-applicants, so check with the schools you are interested in.

Finally, let’s talk about your next steps if you are waitlisted. Admissions committees areaware that this can be the most frustrating decision to receive. There are somethings you can do to help your chances.

First Irecommend re-connecting with your admissions contact to say thank you forextending your chances to become a part of the next class of MBA students.Re-affirm your desire and interest in the school. Ask the admissionsrepresentative if there is any additional information they would like you tosubmit.

Second,think long and hard if there is any additional or new information you canprovide to the committee. Have you been promoted or had any newaccomplishments/awards since submitting your application? If so, ask thecommittee if you can send an updated resume. Are there any optional pieces ofthe application that you did not submit originally, that you can add now? Anynew pieces of information can be valuable to your admissions decision.Last, I would again recommendbeing open and honest with the school about deadlines and awards you may havefrom other programs.
