Yes, in consulting world, top school doesn't really make a huge difference, since consulting firms don't have quota for schools(unlike IB, finance schools do give you an edge). Even if your school has a strong alumni network in certain company, it doesn't help too much. However, companies do have a few "target school", which means if you're not from their target schools, the odds would be even less favorable for you.
Outside of consulting, the access to US jobs are determined by each company's own policy, rather than the ranking of your school. But many corporate won't go to every b-school to do recruiting, so getting into a top 7 school doesn't necessarily guarantee you a job in US, but will definitely give you more chances.
In general, if 30% of students from your school can land a job in consulting, you can hardly blame it on the school. But let's face the reality, it's still a huge challenge, and some jobs are more challenging for international students than others.
This is just my personal perspective on the overall odds, but it doesn't necessarily translate into discouragement for you. Getting a MBA is surely a good way into top consulting firm, so just focus on your b-school application(if you plan to) and worry about recruiting afterwards. |
